707 cases filed in capital, 5,079 arrested over 24th mass uprising

On August 5, 2024, the Awami League government fell in the face of a mass uprising. Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and left the country. During the movement, numerous people were killed and injured in attacks and shootings by law enforcement agencies, Awami League and its affiliated organizations. The UN report lists 1,400 killed and 23,000 injured.

So far (August 5, 2025), 707 cases have been filed in 50 police stations in the capital on charges of murder and attempted murder during the movement. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several thousand top leaders and activists of the party were accused in these cases. After the case, the law enforcement agencies arrested former Law Minister Anisul Haque, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s former trade advisor Salman F Rahman, former minister Amir Hossain Amu, former minister Dipu Moni, Bangladesh Workers’ Party President and former minister Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President and former Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, former ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former MP Momtaz Begum, AM Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Kazi Monirul Islam Monu, Abdus Sobhan Golap, AKM Sarwar Jahan Badsha and 5,079 leaders, activists and government officials of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations.

Former IGP of Bangladesh Police Md. Shahidul Haque and Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and 23 police members were arrested. The other arrested police members are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md. Asaduzzaman Mia (64), former DIG Mollah Nazrul Islam (52), former DC Tanvir Salehin Emon, former Sylhet Police Superintendent Abdul Mannan (46), former Police Superintendent Mohammad Asaduzzaman (44), former DC of DB Lalbagh Zone Mashiur Rahman (48), Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (Dhanmondi Zone) Abdullah Hill Kafi (39), Assistant Police Commissioner (AC) Md. Tanzil Ahmed (37), ADC (currently promoted to SP) Md. Shahen Shah (41), Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Md. Jewel Rana (43), former Gulshan Police Station OC currently Additional Police Superintendent Md. Rafiqul Islam (58), former Additional Police Superintendent Md. Apel Uddin (39), Assistant Police Commissioner (Detective Gulshan Division) Md. Iftekhar Mahmud (34), former OC of Jatrabari Police Station Md. Abul Hasan (52), Inspector (unarmed) Mazharul Islam (49), Sub-Inspector (unarmed) Md. Sajjad-uz-Zaman (36), Nayek Sajib Sarkar (27), Constable Sujan Hossain (20), Shoaibu Rahman and Md. Bayozid Bostami (20).

The DMP’s prosecution department gave this information to BSS. ADC (Administration) of the prosecution department, Main Uddin Chowdhury, said on Friday that 707 cases have been filed on charges of murder and attempted murder after the 24th coup. 5,079 people, including ministers, MPs and bureaucrats, were arrested in these cases. 23 policemen, including two former IGPs, are under arrest. The cases are currently under investigation.
